John “Jack” Gerald Austin November 11, 1930 – April 29, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guestbook Entries| Send Sympathy Card John “Jack” Austin, age 88, of Fisher, MN passed away peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2019 at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks. John Gerald Austin was born November 11, 1930 in rural Grand Forks, ND the 6th of 7 children to Frank and Cora (Enright ) Austin. He was raised on the family farm in rural Grand Forks where his family resided for several years.

Jack attended elementary school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Grand Forks until his family moved to the Fisher, MN area, where they operated a grain and dairy farm. In 1950, Jack was united in marriage to Margaret “Peggy” Wavra. They had two sons, David and Edward.

They briefly lived to Seattle, WA before returning to East Grand Forks, MN, where two more sons, Daniel and Richard were born. Jack continued to work with his father on the Fisher Farm until it burned in 1969. Later, he was employed with Farmsco Oil Company for several years.

Eventually, he retired from the Grand Forks Herald where he worked with his two oldest sons. During that time, another son, Christopher, was born. Jack and his family were longtime members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks.

Later in life, he became a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Jack dearly loved his farm, his house and the family lake home at Rocky Point at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. He spent many days fishing and enjoying family time at the lake.

Jack loved to talk about old times and often shared forgotten family stories. He will be greatly missed. Jack is survived by his former wife, Margaret; four of his sons, David (Sheryl), Daniel (Kristi), Richard (Mary Ann) and Christopher; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Edward; his infant great-grandsons, Andrew Michael Austin and Donald Joseph Austin; his sisters, Adorine Scheving, Margaret “Peggy” Norton and Loretta Norton and his brothers, Robert Austin, Edward Austin and Keith Austin. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2019 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Thursday.
