Rhinecliff – John L. “Jack” Herron, Jr., 102, passed away Monday, December 3, 2018, at Archcare at Ferncliff Nursing Home. Jack honorably served in the US Army during WWII and participated in numerous battles in Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was discharged September 21, 1945 after four years of service.

Upon his return Jack returned to the area and continued his 30 year career as a machine operator for IBM, Poughkeepsie. He also owned a lawn mower business and was a Snapper dealer in Highland. He moved to Rhinebeck in 1986 and began working as a school bus driver from 1987-2000.

Jack was a life member of American Legion Montgomery Post #429; the Red Hook VFW Post #7765; and an honorary member and former trustee of Red Hook-Rhinebeck Elks Lodge #2022. Born January 9, 1916 in Plainville, MA, he was the son of John L. Herron, Sr. and Marion (Smith) Herron. He was predeceased by his wives Henrietta (Powers) Dunn and Francis (Indelicato) Herron; as well as his son John L. Herron, III; grandson John L. Herron IV; his brothers, Roy, James, Robert and Julian; and his half-brother; sister Catherine Herron, half-sister Jeanne; and son in law Robert Brammer Jack is survived by his wife Mildred K. “Millie” (Stetson) Herron, whom he married November 14, 1989; his children Susan (William) Evans; twin daughters Maryann (Mike) Hinchey and Catherine (Philip) Mathews; step-children, Mildred (fiancée Charles Pickert) Brammer, Mary (Wayne) Farley, Laura (Thomas) Cullen, and Sandra (Ray) Hicks; daughter in law Marie Herron; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorial calling hours are Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market ST. , Rhinebeck. Members of the American Legion and VFW will conduct services at 3:30 PM and members of the Elks Lodge #2022 will conduct services at 3:45.
