Obituary for John Milton Ivy John Milton Ivy was born 24 March 1928 to John Marvin and Mabel Land Ivy in Frost, Texas. He passed away in San Antonio on 22 April 2018 at his daughter’s home following a brief illness. Family and friends recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a karaoke bash at the VFW and brunch the following day.
A graduate of Hubbard High School (class of 1945) and Trinity University, John worked in civil engineering for the Department of Defense at Brooks AFB, then Ft. Sam Houston, retiring after 35 years of service. John served as an Army medic on the hospital ship USS Hope near the end of WWII.
He was a Mason, past master of Patterson Lodge #117, and active member of Hubbard High alumni association, having most recently attended his 70th reunion. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Mr. Ivy had a vast knowledge of the history of country music and especially enjoyed performing karaoke.
Known to some as “the heartthrob of the Austin Highway”, his greatest hits included “Milk Cow Blues” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. John Ivy is survived by his children, Annette Ivy and Joel Ivy; brother and sister-in-law, Billy Frank and Fannie Raye Ivy; as well as nieces, nephews, friends, and his faithful canine companions, Cindy and Bobby. He was preceded in death by former spouse and mother of his children, Marilyn Hill and spouse May Baird.
John’s favorite charity was the Animal Defense League, 11300 Nacogdoches Road, SA, TX 78217-2318. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018, with a Funeral Service to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Reception to follow at the home after the service.
