A Memorial Service for John R. Nelson, 86, of Painesville Township, will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Painesville United Methodist Church, 71 North Park Place, Painesville, Ohio. Family and friends may call 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, October 26th at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Mr. Nelson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Ohio on October 18, 2018.

Born on August 9th 1932, he was raised primarily in Mentor and resided in Mentor then Painesville for many years. John was an avid musician and played in a show band for 25 years. Enjoyed singing Barbershop with the Johnnycake Ridge Singers and sang in the Painesville United Methodist Church choir.

He loved working out at the Central YMCA and was on the Lake County YMCA Board of Directors. He served as the Dream House Chairman for many years. He also served on the finance and properties committees.

His hobbies included boating, running, fishing, playing golf, and was a loyal Cleveland Browns fan. John served the Army during the Korean war and was a former Vice President at The Ohio Rubber Company for 42 years. Subsequent to his retirement he worked for Century 21 Real Estate as a realtor.

Survivors are his brother Philip Nelson; his son John (Raquel) V. Nelson from his first marriage to Sylvia Nelson; and step-daughters Diana Dixon, Donna Dixon, and Dora Dixon. His life was blessed with 7 grandchildren: John V. Nelson, Jr – “BJ”, Nicholas (Emily) Nelson and Allyson (Michael) Arcaro, Ryan (ConnieMarie) Mahaffey, Kyle Mahaffey, and Dylan (Ashley) Mahaffey, and Sean Dixon in addition he had seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephew. Also surviving is his dear companion of many years, Patty Wilcoxon.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife Genevieve in 2008, his father and mother John R Nelson Sr and Marjorie (nee Ott) Nelson and his sister and her husband Patricia (Fred) Bower.
