OBITUARY John Worrell Poynor MD October 11, 1940 – October 6, 2018 John Worrell Poynor was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 11, 1940, the son of Wilmer Smith Poynor, Jr. and Helen Worrell Poynor. He died at home on October 6, 2018. He graduated from Indian Springs School, Washington and Lee University and The University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham.

After completing an internship, a surgical residency, a residency in Otolaryngology at The Medical School, as well as a Fellowship at the Air Force Institute of Pathology he joined ENT Associates of Alabama and practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital for forty-seven years, up to one week before his death. He served his Country as a medical doctor in The United States Air Force. Committed to education on all levels, he served and supported the institutions that greatly impacted his life.

Medicine and art were his passion. He advised numerous college and medical school applicants. He served on The Mountain Brook Library Foundation, The Board and Committees of The Birmingham Museum of Art and The Board of Highlands School.

He was a member of The Cathedral Church of the Advent and a past Vestry member and Junior Warden. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Frank Bouchelle Poynor. He is survived by his wife, Nancy McCall Poynor; his brother, Wilmer Smith Poynor III and his wife, Carol Perkins Poynor; his niece, Helen Poynor Crabtree and her husband, Reaves; and nephews, Wilmer Smith Poynor, IV and his wife, Elizabeth and Hamilton Perkins Bouchelle Poynor and his wife, Kim; and great nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at The Cathedral Church of the Advent on Wednesday October 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation prior to the service will begin at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers Dr. Poynor’s choice of memorials is The Mountain Brook Schools Foundation or your choice of charity.
