JOHN H. KNIGHT, age 90, of Kettering, Ohio, passed away peacefully June 22, 2018 at Kettering Memorial Hospital. Born on February 20, 1928 in Pomeroy, OH, John graduated from Powhatan Point High School in 1945 where he was the senior class president. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WW II serving both in Artillery and Calvary divisions.

Following the war, John attended the Ohio State University on the GI Bill and graduated with a degree in machinery and electrical engineering. John found a job with Vickers as a mechanical engineer that provided him the opportunity to validate the designs of his seniors. By designing specialized tooling and fixturing, John was able to ascertain if the senior mechanical engineer’s designs worked.

Since John’s training was in electrical engineering, he continued to seek a position tailored to his talents – which brought him to Dayton, OH and NCR. He soon met his new bride, Icy Marie Smallwood and were married on June 26, 1954. Following NCR, John’s career path landed him at Sheffield Gauge, Wacline, and Nu-Tech Industries before starting his own company, Knight Controls.

John’ new company employed many new ambitious young engineers from Kettering, OH as his engineering firm created innovative systems for automotive, appliance, aerospace, and heavy machinery industries throughout the world. John’s passion for engineering kept him actively working at his firm until his late 70’s, at which time he turned the company over to his eldest son. John spent most of his retired years enjoying time with friends, touring with Elderhostel, working through copious amounts of Sudoku puzzle books, and finding new friends through online ancestral tree programs.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Icy Marie (Smallwood) Knight in 1996, and is also survived by his three children: John, Henry, and Cyndi. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jack, Jenna, William, and Grayson. Viewing will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd.

, Kettering, OH from 4:00pm-6:00pm on Thursday, June 28, 2018 and services will be held at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 3705 Far Hills Ave. , Kettering, OH at 12:00pm on Friday, June 29, 2018 with an additional visitation from 10:00am-11:30am at the church.
