OBITUARY Jonathan W. Smith August 30, 1967 – October 10, 2018 Jonathan William Smith, August 30, 1967 – October 10, 2018; Jon was peacefully reunited with his beloved late son, Jonathan Sawyer, on October 10th in his sleep at home. Thinking of Jonathan and his many adventures will bring smiles to people’s faces. Jon could spark a conversation with just about anyone and make them feel as if they’d known him forever.

He was loved and will be missed by many. Jon was born and raised in Dartmouth. He graduated from Dartmouth High in 1985.

He worked as a crane operator, fabricator and engineer of systems on boats. He had true talents in welding. For many years, he worked alongside his father, building marine fishing vessels.

In 2004 he graduated from the Plymouth Police Academy. From this time to 2010, he was a member of the Dartmouth Police Department. The family would like to thank the Dartmouth Police Department for the support that they have given to Jonathan over the years, especially with the loss of his son.

It will always be greatly appreciated. Some of Jonathan’s happiest times were spent with his son, dirt biking, 4-wheeling and fishing. He enjoyed boating with his family in Buzzard’s Bay, the Slocum River and the Westport River.

He found peace and solace on the water. Although he has been taken at a young age, his creative and humorous energy will remain within the hearts of the numerous people that loved him. The family would also like to thank the many family members and friends that helped Jonathan through his struggles; he spoke of many and appreciated the help that was extended.

Jonathan leaves behind his parents, Sherman and Patricia Smith, his two sisters, Judy Cronin and Amy Smith-Pontes, and his four nieces, Hannah and Mariah Baker, and Frances and Lily Pontes, and great-nephew Joseph Gomes, all of Dartmouth as well as numerous other friends and family. He was the father of the late Jonathan Sawyer Smith and brother-in-law of the late Francis Cronin and Steven Pontes. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting House, 739 Horseneck Road, South Dartmouth MA 02748.

Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jonathan’s memory to Dartmouth High School, Attn: Yvette Nunes, Bookkeeper, 555 Bakerville Road, Dartmouth MA 02748 for a future scholarship. Arrangements are in the care of WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, MA 02748.
