LUDLOW – Jose (Joe) H. Saloio, of Ludlow, died peacefully on December 17, 2018 at the age of 96. Born on February 21, 1922 in Pawtucket, RI, he was the eldest child of Armelin and Luciana (Ribeiro) Saloio. Joe graduated from Springfield Trade School in 1939 and was a Journeyman Patternmaker for Chapman Valve Manufacturing Company, Springfield Cast Products, and F&D Tool Company.

But he was best known as one of the region’s finest trumpet players. From the 1950s to the 1990s, Joe played for most of the major artists and shows that toured the region. He also performed with dozens of local bands and orchestras (including his own) for weddings, parties, and other special occasions.

Until his early 90s, Joe played out multiple times a week with local groups. When not performing, he was a trumpet instructor, teaching nearly 500 students over the years at his studio and as an Adjunct Instructor at Westfield State University. Joe was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Stella (Chrusciel) Saloio, two daughters, Mary Ann and Linda (Saloio) Bush, a son-in-law, Tom Milbier, and a sister and two brothers, Irene Methe, Carlos, and James.

He is survived by his daughter Jody (Saloio) Milbier of Ludlow, son Joe Saloio and his wife Cheryl of Albuquerque, NM, son-in-law Rick Bush of Ontario, New York, and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Jeff, Lesley, Lori, Kim, Hannah, Sam, Jack, Sophie, and Stella. He also leaves behind four brothers and a sister, Armelin, Arthur, Manuel, Raymond, and Ida Santos, and his loving friend, Bea Makuch. Visiting hours will be on Friday, December 21, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Nowak Funeral & Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Ave, Indian Orchard, MA.

The funeral for Joe will be on Saturday, December 22, gathering at the funeral home at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating Joe’s life at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 181 Hubbard St., Ludlow, followed by burial at Island Pond Cemetery, Center St., Ludlow.
