OBITUARY Josef Meier February 21, 1937 – November 25, 2018 Josef Meier, of Garland, Texas was born in Lucerne, Switzerland on February 21, 1937. After high school he followed his father’s career and began his apprenticeship in a bakery. After his apprenticeship he held different positions in family owned businesses and other hotels and clubs in Switzerland, France, Curacao and the United States.
Joe moved to the United States in 1965 and settled in Dallas where he worked as a pastry chef at the Sheraton Hotel-Downtown, City Club and other establishments in Dallas. He was a very talented and devoted pastry chef that excelled in sugar pieces, fancy wedding cakes and many other special items. He was instrumental in the creation of the Christmas Village at Baylor Hospital made of sugar pieces and gingerbread.
Joe was a member of the Dallas Chef’s Association. Joe met his future wife, Emilie “Vreni” on a return trip to Switzerland. There they realized as small children they had been next-door neighbors, although they did not know each other at that time.
Josef married Emilie “Vreni” Meier on January 19, 1970 in Switzerland. They were happily married for 48 years. Joe enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and he had a passion for fly-fishing.
He also enjoyed tying flies for his many fishing trips and for friends. Declining health made him abandon this hobby in the last few years. He was a former member of the Dallas Fly Fishing Club.
Joe passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 in Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest sister. He leaves behind his grieving wife Vreni and their families in Switzerland including his sisters Hedi and family and Pia.
He also leaves behind many friends in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Hockessin, Delaware, San Antonio, Texas and Temple, Texas. We will dearly miss him, his big smile and the twinkle in his eyes. So long my friend.
