Joseph H. Mitchell January 21, 1934 – January 11, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Joseph “Hacker” Mitchell was third of four children born to the late Ovey and Agnes Mitchell on June 21, 1934, in Abbeville, Louisiana. His wife, parents, and siblings (London, Rose, and Abraham) preceded him in death. Hacker received his communion at 10 years of age in Abbeville.
He remained in Abbeville until he began high school. For high school, Hacker relocated to Beaumont, Texas where he attended Herbert High School graduating in 1954. Following high school, Hacker enrolled for one year in Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas).
Throughout high school and college, he was an avid athlete. He played on both the football and baseball teams and followed both sports throughout his life. In 1956, he embarked upon a 22 year career in the United States Army, as a Petroleum Supply Specialist, during which he successfully deployed in support of the Vietnam War (1965-66).
His military career took him to various installations throughout the continental United States, Germany, Korea, and Thailand. Following military service, Hacker completed 20 years of civil service from which he retired in 1999. While in Germany, Hacker met Erika Gleis of Giessen.
He and Erika married on March 14, 1969 in Erika’s hometown (Giessen, Germany). This union lasted until her passing in November 2002. Throughout Hacker’s retirement years, he travelled frequently to visit and support family and friends and attend his high school reunions.
One of his favorite past-times, which resulted in him meeting soo many people, was people watching at his favorite store (HEB). Hacker enjoyed these activities until he was called to rest on the morning of January 11th, 2019. He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Joann Jones, of St. Louis, Missouri; six (6) grandchildren: Craig (Seattle, WA), Kevin, LaToya, Sharon, Alfreda (all of St. Louis, MO), and Tanesha (Killeen, TX); nine (9) great-grandchildren: Kiara, Kyani, Tristian, Gabriel, Cree, and Carson (all of St. Louis, MO) and Kameron, Anais, and Twila (Killeen, TX); two (2) great-great grandchildren: Kamarion and Demi (both from St. Louis, MO); sister-in-law, Margaret Mitchell (Maine); nieces, Jean Mitchell and Mary Mitchell (Both of Maine); and a host of family and friends.
A visitation will be held at 10AM on Saturday, with Funeral Services to follow at 11AM, at Killeen Memorial Park, Lake Rd. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and forever dear”.
