Born in Painesville, Ohio on October 4th, 1938, to John and Mary Bertone, Joe was a lifetime Painesville resident. Married for nearly 58 years to Barbara nee Kutie, he is survived by his wife, son, David J. Bertone, daughter, Diane E. Gorom (Stanley) and grandchildren, Nicole, Rebecca, Victoria, Julia, Chelsea, Olivia and Joey, brother John, sister in law Nancy Albert (Steve) and many much loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters; Antoinette, Rose and Mary. A member of the US Navy, Joe was a printer at The Painesville Publishing Company for 40 years. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Painesville, and recently St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Concord.

In addition to his deep love for his family and his faith, Joe loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener all of his life. Joe was co-owner of the Concord Christmas Tree Farm for many years and loved providing generations of Lake County families with their special tree for the Christmas holiday. Upon retirement, Joe volunteered at the Lake Farmpark by growing the evergreen trees for their annual Holiday Lights event.

He sometimes taught teachers and their students about the process of growing Christmas trees and loved their surprise at learning that real trees don’t just come out of a box. Volunteering at the Farmpark was pure joy for Joe. Family and friends will be received at the Spear Mulqueeny Funeral home on Friday, November 9th from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 10th. In Lieu of flowers Contributions in Joe’s name may be made to St. Gabriel’s St. Vincent DePaul or St. Gabriel Food Pantry.
