Obituary for Joseph W. Murphy Cohoes NY Joseph W. Murphy 84 died May 21, 2018. Born in Troy he was son of the late Edward and Ruth Scouler Murphy. Joe was widely known for his love of getting together with family for trips to Northhampton Fair, Great Barrington and Green Mountain Park.

Since returning from Atlantic City, where he fulfilled his life dream of working in the casino cage, Joe became closer to his children, grandchildren and his loving sister, Aunt Peg. In his retirement years, Joe enjoyed working as a parimutuel clerk at Saratoga Race Track and often travelled to work major races, including the Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Preakness. Joe will always be remembered for his great skill at handicapping and his most notable creation, “The Governor’s Selections” a strategic tip sheet he formulated in the 70s and 80s with his eldest son Billy.

Upon settling in Cohoes, Joe enjoyed playing poker, pool, darts and spending time with the people that meant the most to him. His quick wit, laughter and ability to live life to the fullest will always be remembered. He was father of Joseph “Billy” ( Darcy) Murphy Jr., Daniel (Debra) Murphy, James Murphy, Kathleen (Marty) Riberdy, Susan (William) Yaremko, Gary Murphy, Michael (Lauren) Murphy, Joseph (Rina) Murphy and the late Gary Edward Murphy.

Brother of Marguerite Bauer and the late Ruth Johnson, Grace Kowansky, Edward and John Murphy, Jane Bendon and George, James and Eugene Murphy. Also survived by Many Grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1pm from the Marra Funeral Home.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Waterford. Calling hours are Thursday from 10-1pm prior to services. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Joseph W. Murphy please visit our Sympathy Store.
