Judith A. “Judy” Berwald (nee Smith), age 68, of Fairview Park, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at Cleveland Clinic – Fairview Hospital following a short illness. Born November 23, 1950 in Elyria, she was a lifelong resident of Cuyahoga County. Judy attended Sunbeam School in the 1950’s and graduated from Westlake High School in 1969.

She also attended Wright State University and Cleveland State University, receiving a bachelors and master’s degree. Judy was a member of St. Angela Merici Parish in Fairview Park and loved to read and learn. She volunteered with the United Cerebral Palsy and enjoyed mentoring college students with cerebral palsy.

Surviving is her mother, Mary Hartling of Amherst; father, Howard Smith of North Ridgeville; brothers, Rick Smith of Bellaire, TX, Chris Smith of Centerville, TX and Tim Smith of Henderson, NV; sisters, Molly O’Neill of Amherst and Cheryl Zinck of Centerville, OH; and 16 nieces and nephews and 19 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Berwald in 2016; step father, Ernest K. Hartling; and sisters, Susan Smith and Cindy Smith. A memorial mass is scheduled for Saturday, March 9th at 11:30 A.M. in St. Angela Merici Parish, 20970 Lorain Rd, Fairview Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or at www. stjude.org. The Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, Lorain, is handling the arrangements.
