Obituary for Judson Earl “Jud” Bates September 20, 1923 – March 20, 2019 Jud Bates was an extraordinary man who lived an ordinary life. Judson Earl Bates was born in NYC on September 20, 1923 to Allen and Viola Bates. He lived on City Island, NYC until 1966 when he moved to New City, NY.

He served in WW II as a communications specialist, after which he attended NYU. He worked at 9th Federal Savings and Loan as a Mortgage Loan Officer. After leaving the bank Jud, went to work for Rockland Fuel Oil Company.

Raised on City Island, Juddy loved the water and shared his love of fishing with his sons, Allan and Devin. He was also an avid seafood lover. Gout be damned.

Once he retired, he began a life long battle with his crabgrass. Every spring he could be seen spraying his bottle of weed killer, while his lawn suffered from profound alopecia. Jud engaged everyone he met.

He had a quick smile and loved to tease family and friends. Age was merely a number for Jud. He shared the need for speed with his son, Allan.

At the age of 90, he stole Allan’s wave runner and was questioning the flashing light on the speedometer which topped out at 65. A note of gratitude to Dr. Albert Tartini who gave us to two and a half years of precious time with this extraordinary man. Jud is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ann Bates, four children, Alison Paradise, Linda Page Rough, Devin Bates and Allan Bates, six grandchildren Caitlin Paradise, Devon Paradise, Brittney Bryan, Ryan Page, Michael Bates, Devin Bates Jr., and one great granddaughter Sophia Porpora.

A life well lived, a man well loved. A private celebration of Jud’s life will be held on April 13, 2019. Donations can be made to: Fresenius Dialysis Center, 37 W.
