OBITUARY Judy Goetz September 3, 1939 – October 11, 2018 Judith Condon Goetz, known to friends and family as “Judy,” passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on October 11, 2018, at the age of 79 years. Judy was a long-time resident of Charlottesville, Virginia with her husband, Charles J. Goetz, widely known as “Charlie”. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 3, 1939, to the late Miriam Bowen Condon and J. Harry Condon, she was raised in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

She completed her high school education at St. Xavier Academy in Providence before attending Regis College, outside of Boston, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Business. Sixty-one years ago this Fall, during her freshman year, she went on a blind date that changed the course of her life – she and Charlie have been together ever since. After college, Judy worked for the CIA in Langley, Virginia, and then at a law firm in Charlottesville, leaving in 1963 to start her family.

Judy will be remembered for her love of cooking and travelling, in addition to her extensive volunteer work in the Blacksburg and Charlottesville communities. She was honored in 1997 as one of the Charlottesville Daily Progress Distinguished Dozen in recognition of her service. Organizations that benefited from her volunteer activities include: American Red Cross blood drives, Birthright, the Charlottesville High and Walker Middle School libraries, the Discovery Museum, Emergency Food Bank, Head Start, Hearthstone / Ronald McDonald House, and the University of Virginia Hospital Gift Shop.

Judy was also an avid bridge player for many years and no crossword puzzle was safe from her reach. Her travels with Charlie took her far and wide, both in the United States and the rest of the world -including Europe too many times to count, Antarctica, the Trans-Siberian Railroad, and so many other places. Safaris in southern Africa and giraffes held especially fond memories for her.

She was fortunate to have many deep and lasting friendships and the family is grateful for all the calls, cards, emails, and visits that poured in to Judy, especially over the past six months as her health declined. It kept Judy’s love of relating, in detail, the news of everyone in her extended circle going strong. The family also would like to thank Judy’s doctors, nurses, and other caregivers for their skills and compassion, with particular acknowledgement and gratitude for Doretha Givens, whose care for Judy and the family has been unparalleled.

Judy is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Charlie, her sons, Charles John “Chuck,” Daniel Joseph “Dan,” and Eric James Goetz, Chuck’s wife, Karen Nash-Goetz, and their son, Harry Stuart “Hal” Goetz, and Eric’s partner, Kelly Quihuiz. She also is survived by her sister Geraldine Lavery, her brother Joseph H. Condon, and her sister-in-law Ann Williams Condon, in addition to nephews Glenn M. Lavery and John A. Condon, and her niece Beth C. Poirier, together with Glenn’s three daughters and Beth’s son. She was predeceased by two siblings, Sister Sean Condon, RSM, and Miriam “Mim” Condon.

Judy will be long remembered by her family and large circle of friends for her welcoming table bearing her delicious meals and desserts, along with a healthy dose of humor and keen intellect. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018, from 10am-12pm, with a memorial service immediately following, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Memorial donations in memory of Judy can be made to the Virginia Discovery Museum, 524 East Main Street, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902.
