Obituary for Katharina Margareta “Gretel” Fleischer (Zeitler) Katharina M. “Gretel” Fleischer, 92, of South Plainfield, died on November 22, 2018 at home. Born and raised in Grafenwoehr, Germany to the late Michael and Katharina Zeitler, Gretel worked at the Post Exchange on the U.S. Army base in Germany during World War II. While working during the war, she met the love of her life, George Fleischer, a U.S. Army soldier who she married after their courtship.

Upon returning to the United States, the Fleischer’s resided in Wisconsin, and Jersey City, before settling to South Plainfield over 50 years ago. Gretel was a devoted wife and mother, who dedicated her life to her family. She worked at Deborah Heart and Lung center in their hospitality department, enjoyed cooking, and was proud of her U.S. Citizenship.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Eanes. Surviving are her beloved husband of 70 years, George Fleischer, her son Raymond Fleischer and wife Karen, her grandson Lewie Eanes and wife Trina, her sister Gertrude Jenkins and husband Tom, her nephew, Monsignor Ronny Jenkins, her sister in law Jean Caswell, her caretaker Marguerite Grant, as well as her extended family. Family and friends are welcome to gather for visitation on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm at the McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield.
