OBITUARY Katherine Chapman Maclin December 23, 1928 – September 15, 2018 Katherine Beatrice Chapman Maclin was born December 23, 1928 in a farmhouse between Hutchins and Wilmer. Born two months premature, she was kept alive through a cold winter night by the grace of God and the warm embrace of her maternal grandmother; Mary Alice Moore. Katherine was descended from pioneers who came to Texas from Indiana in 1847 and settled in south Dallas County.

Her paternal Great-Grandfathers; William Chapman and William Nicholas, served in the Confederacy during the Civil War. She was also descended from Kentuckians; the Moors and the Grahams, who arrived in Texas in the early 1900’s. Katherine and little sister Mary Nell grew up on the farm in south Dallas County, the daughters of Dudley W. Chapman and Beatrice Moore Chapman.

Katherine graduated from Wilmer Hutchins High School in 1946. While in high school she was a cheerleader and played on the girls basketball team. When Katherine was 16 she was voted Miss Dallas County 4-H Gold Star Club Girl for 1944, a big honor for high school students from the country at the time.

Katherine won the award over 1,000 other 4-H girls in 31 Dallas County communities. It was given for excellence in gardening, cooking and other domestic achievements. She was a 4-H Club member for seven years.

Katherine also loved riding her paint horse. “Daddy would saddle up my pony and off I’d go! ”, she would say.

In 1950 Katherine was married to Horace Milton Maclin Jr. and they started raising their family. Steve was born twelve months later, Gary followed in 1953 and Glen came along in 1958. The family moved to Florida in 1960 when Milt, a field rep of the Florida Citrud Commission, was transferred to the headquarters office in Lakeland.

Eventually the family moved back to Texas and Katherine settled in Lancaster in 1973 and went to work for the Dallas County tax office and the child welfare department of the Texas Department of Human Res. She retired from the state agency in 1989. In retirement Katherine loved babysitting her five grandchildren.
