Kay Nicholson May 02, 1942 – January 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Kay Nicholson, 76, of Alden, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the Hansen Family Hospital in Iowa Falls. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 4th at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden with burial in the Alden cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the start of the service at the church.

The Surls Funeral Home is assisting the family. Kay Louise was born on May 2, 1942, in Iowa Falls to Merle and Paula (Sielaff) Shaner. She graduated from Alden High School in the class of 1960.

On October 1, 1961, Kay was united in marriage to Duane Nicholson in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden. She worked as a postal clerk in the U.S. Postal Service. She had resided in the Alden area all her life and had recently taken up residence at the Ashbrook Assisted Living facility in July 2018.

Kay enjoyed spending family time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and time with her siblings and spouses. She was always cheering for the Hawkeyes on game day. She had an artistic flare for caricature drawings, painting and took pleasure in her calla lilies and annual planting of impatiens.

She enjoyed visits from family and friends while living in Ashbrook. Special thanks to the Ashbrook staff, residents and new friendships that were made during her short stay. Kay is survived by her children Jeff (Anita) Nicholson of Iowa City, Julie (Bob) Reynolds of Iowa Falls and Jennifer (Jeff) Sievers of Norwalk; her grandchildren Kassi (Matt) Rabe of Iowa Falls, Shelby (Chad) Fonken of Kamrar, John Nicholson of Des Moines, Shane Nicholson of Chicago, IL, Parker Reynolds of Grimes, Abigale Sievers of Grimes and Trey Sievers of Norwalk; great-grandchildren, Grace Kay and Maddox Rabe, Nicholas and Brooklyn Kay Fonken and her siblings Sherrie (Wayne) Sesker of Forest City, Ken (Nancy) Shaner of East Jordan, MI and Sue Funk of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane “Nick”, sister Carol, infant brother Mark and niece Laura Weatherly.
