Keith was born on May 31, 1927, at the Dykins’ Farm, near Sentinel Butte, North Dakota a son of Frank and Mabel (Sells), Keith grew up there. From the age of eleven, after the death of his paternal grandfather, Keith joined his grandmother in Ramona, South Dakota to help manage the farm. He lived there, attending school and farming, for three years.
In 1941, he returned to Sentinel Butte, farming and raising cattle with his parents. Keith met Marjorie Ann Niece through his sister, Lorraine. When Margie graduated from nursing school in Montana, they married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on February 17, 1953.
After making the decision to farm, they traveled around to find the best farmland, and seeing Kansas had not cleaned up from the Dust Bowl yet, they came back home and farmed and raised a family together in the Sentinel Butte/Beach area. They were married fifty- three years, until Margie’s death in July of 2006. To this union three children were born: Jim, Joan and Jack.
Keith enjoyed raising and showing Shorthorn cattle. He traveled the United States and Canada judging and showing bulls. Prairie Sportsman and Glamour Boy were his two best.
Believing he would not have been as successful in farming and honored to have been trusted with their land, Glenn Cook and Mary Hess sold Keith the first land he owned. Keith was a member of the Beach Masonic Lodge and St. John’s Catholic Church. Keith enjoyed his life as a farmer and was proud his sons and grandsons continue to farm the land that has been in his family for over 100 years.
