Kyle Lawrence Harrop, born October 6, 1966 in Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on September 14, 2018 from heart failure at his residence in Indianapolis. Kyle was the son of Walter N. & Donna (Kelly) Harrop of Ashland, OH. Additional survivors include his brother, Trent (Julie) Harrop of Peebles, OH; domestic partner, John Schmutte of Indianapolis, IN and a host of aunts, uncles.

Kyle loved his family, friends and his dogs. He recently became active in assisting with dog rescues. His family and friends were often blessed by his designing skills and creative abilities.

He developed and maintained technology skills throughout his career. He attended school at Warsaw elementary school and was a graduate of River View High School in Warsaw, Ohio. He was a field commander of the River View High School marching band for three years.

He graduated from Mt. Union University in Alliance, Ohio, where he was field commander for three years and was a member of the Brass Choir for four years. The Brass Choir performed at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for the Easter or Palm Sunday services during his college career.

Kyle was an instructor for the Fred J. Miller Marching Band Staff during high school and college years and continued to help each summer with their leadership training. He began his teaching career at Carroll High School in Dayton. He then taught in Douglasville High School in Georgia and Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia.

He worked briefly for HealthPartners in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was Band Director at Perry Meridian High School from 1998-2001. Kyle served as the Director of Student Programs for the Indiana Association of School Principals, joining IASP in 2001.

He oversaw Academic Competitions, Cheer Competitions, the Academic All-Star Program, the MLK Essay contest, and the Student Day at the Legislature. Under his leadership, the Department of Student Programs in 2017-2018 worked with over 42,000 students and 1500 Indiana schools. Kyle was instrumental in the development of the Science Bowl and the M.A.T.H.

Bowl and his passion for Academic Decathlon competition allowed all levels of students to find success at the local and state level. Kyle’s easy manner with students in all competitions and programs allowed them to exhibit their talents in amazing ways, and gave all involved a sense of grace during stressful competitive moments. The IASP Department of Student Programs is regarded across the state and nation as a leader in student leadership opportunities, and this is due to Kyle’s profound dedication to students and to his IASP colleagues.

He pursued his continuing education at Illinois University and Wright State University. Visitation will be held from 3-8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 18 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave. , Indianapolis, IN 46227.

The Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, September 19 at 2:30 PM at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Parker officiating. Additional visitation will be held at the Methodist Church in Shawnee, Ohio on Thursday, from 1-2:00 PM, with the graveside service immediately following in the Shawnee Cemetery in Ohio on Thursday, September 19, 2018, officiated by Richard Harrop.
