Landis Roscoe Beasley died in his home on January 21, 2019 in Eugene, Oregon at the age of 76. Landis was born on April 3, 1942 in Four Oaks, NC to John and Gladys (Raynor) Beasley. He grew up in Smithfield, North Carolina and graduated from Smithfield High School where he played football and was a track athlete.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1960. He was stationed with the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem, Germany where he spent his enlistment ending 1964. The friendships made there have lasted a lifetime.
After serving in the Air Force, Landis moved back to the North Carolina area and began a job with Corning Glassworks. It was during the company Christmas party in 1964 that Landis met the love of his life, Betty Jeanette Denton, whom he married on July 18, 1967. From 1967-1973 Landis worked for Bendix Field Services on the radio tracking system for the Apollo Space missions.
He was stationed at Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, Spain and aboard the USNS Vanguard in the South Atlantic Ocean. In 1973 Landis went to work for MODCOMP. Then, in 1976 Landis began his career at Cubic Defense Systems.
During his time with Cubic, Landis and his family traveled the world supporting different Air Combat Training System installations in the US, Europe, and Asia. He was a dedicated and valued member of Cubic for 32 years before retiring in 2008. Landis’s military service, career, and travels led to many adventures.
The stories of which endure to this day. Landis loved traveling and experiencing different cultures, and he made friends everywhere he went. Landis and Jeanette traveled cross-country between Florida and Oregon and enjoyed all that the American countryside had to offer.
As an avid gardener, he maintained beautiful gardens at his homes. He loved to walk his dog through the hills of South Eugene and always took the time to appreciate the nature surrounding him. He passed along his lifelong appreciation of music, particularly bluegrass and American folk music, to his children, in-laws and grandchildren.
It is through his favorite songs and stories of adventure that we will remember him most. Landis is survived by his wife Jeanette of Eugene, OR; mother Gladys of Melbourne, FL; daughter Lisa (Terry) Mahanna of Las Vegas, NV; son John (Sarah) Beasley of Creswell, OR; and 3 grandchildren.
