Longtime Poncha Springs resident Larry Lee Irvin, 74, died May 6, 2019, at home after a long battle with leukemia and its complications. He was born in Chariton, Iowa, to Fred and Hazel Irvin. He married Karen Hellyer on June 12, 1965, and his family said he was always a loving and devoted spouse.

On a vacation to the Salida area the couple fell in love with the mountains and local history. They moved into their Poncha Springs home, where Mrs. Irvin still lives, in October 1969. Mr. Irvin worked at Climax Mine for 17½ years, where he enjoyed operating heavy equipment in the open pit.

He was treasurer of the Poncha Springs Church of Christ for 26 years. Family members said his steadfast love and faith never wavered. Mr. Irvin was a man of many talents, including wood projects and custom knife-making.

He enjoyed shooting the rifles and cannon he made. He also took joy from simple pleasures such as sunrises, sunsets and wildlife. He was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan.

His family said he was loved and admired by family and friends alike as a kind and trustworthy man. His love for his family was said to be “unshakable”. Survivors include his wife of 53 years; daughter, Natalie (Kevin Zoberski) of Salida; son, Matthew (Jill Bergman) of Steamboat Springs; grandchildren, Hunter, Trenton, Tatiana, Kelsie and Tessa; and two great-grandchildren.

At his request no memorial service will take place at this time. A celebration of his life will be held later. Condolences may be mailed to P.O. Box 181, Poncha Springs, CO 81242.

Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida. Online condolences may be offered at lewisandglenn.com.
