Lavonne Jean Peterson, 87, of Gothenburg passed away March 25, 2019 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg. Lavonne was born February 16, 1932 on her grandfather’s homestead in Custer Country, daughter of Peter Andrew Peterson and Nellie Delia Peterson (Young). She grew up on the family farm north of Gothenburg in the New Hope Community and attended elementary school at New Hope School, graduating from Gothenburg High School in 1950.

Lavonne married Duane Peterson on Sept. 2, 1951 at Free Mission Church in Gothenburg. To this union, five children were born – Dan, Susan, Mick, Brenda and Steve.

As a teenager she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and was a lifelong attendee of New Hope Evangelical Free Church where she taught Sunday School and was involved in the Women’s Missionary Society, White Cross and Vacation Bible School. Lavonne was a homemaker with a love for sewing and baking; she specialized in baking cinnamon rolls and providing whipped strawberry Jell-O at family gatherings. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and school events.

Lavonne was preceded in death by: her husband, Duane, her parents, Pete and Nellie, her daughter, Brenda Gilg; a grandson, Matthew Peterson; brothers, Raymond, Lloyd and Glenn Peterson; sisters, Yvonne France, Bernice Jorgenson and Arlene Bates. Survivors include; three sons, Dan (Rhonda) Peterson and Mick (Corriene) Peterson, all of Gothenburg, and Steve Peterson of Seward; her daughter, Susan (Glenn) Ashcraft of Malaga, Spain, 13 grandchildren – Derek, Casey, Megan, Andrew, Christopher, Amber, Kayla, Hannah, Pete, Jake, Madison, Tristan and Ella; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters in-law, Janey Peterson of Lincoln, Margilu Peterson and JoAnn (Boyd) Phillippi all of Cozad; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Visitation will take place at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 Tenth Street, Gothenburg on Friday, April 5, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Family members will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Evangelical Free Church, 1721 Lake Ave, Gothenburg, NE on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 10 a.m. with the Rev.

Robert Litzenberger & Rev. Scott Newman officiating. Interment will follow at the New Hope Cemetery at Gothenburg.
