Obituary for Lawrence Edward Beck Indomitable Spirit Lawrence Edward Beck May 1, 1925 – July 10, 2018 Lawrence (Larry) Edward Beck, 93, died July 10, 2018, at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael, Calif. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 19, at Saint Angela Merici Catholic Church in Brea, Calif. , followed by a reception and then interment at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Rowland Heights, Calif.

With an indomitable spirit, Larry was a World War II veteran of the Pacific and survived to raise a family and achieve a successful engineering career culminating in his 25 years of service at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. He was a faithful Christian, inspiring father, loving husband, loyal friend, amiable host, and a USC graduate, class of 1951. Larry was born May 1, 1925, in Pomona, Calif.

, to Henry L. and Margaret C. Beck. He grew up in Pomona and Artesia, Calif. , where his father owned and operated several mercantile stores.

After graduation from Excelsior Union High School in 1943, Larry joined the Navy in the same year and trained in San Diego as a machinist mate. From boot camp and training he was assigned duty in Honolulu repairing landing craft. Finally transferring to the USS Hornet as a machinist mate Second Class, he operated the large elevator lifting aircraft between decks.

He was honorably discharged at Alameda, Calif. on May 21, 1946. Returning home to Artesia, he found employment with Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach.

Working for a short time on the DC-3 wing assembly, he enrolled at Long Beach City College During his studies, he applied and was accepted to the University of Southern California School of Engineering. Studying mechanical engineering, he graduated in 1951. Since then he was a “Cardinal & Gold” member, supporting the university and its athletic programs.

In 1953, Larry married Mildred Marie Potes and had two surviving children, Robert Finley and Lawrence James. They lived in La Mirada, Calif, and moved to Brea in 1961. Above all, Larry was a devoted Catholic and family man, giving time to the Church, Boy Scouts, and the community.

His tireless effort and support benefitted many charities and ministries, including St. Joseph Soup Kitchen, Medjugorje Peace Conference and St. Anne’s Maternity Home. Survivors include his children, Rev. Lawrence J. Beck, Robert F. Beck and wife Karen Ann, and their daughter Kimberly Beck (Ades), son Christopher, and daughter Kari Beck (Plaisier).

Also seven great-grandchildren, including Zachary & McKenzie Ades, Aveline & Wyatt Beck, and Kaelyn, Everleigh and Grayson Plaisier. Contributions in Larry’s name may be made to St. Angela Merici Parish, 585 S. Walnut Ave. , Brea, CA 92821.
