Layton Worley was the second child born to the late Mr. Daniel Worley and Mrs. Naomi Ford Worley on March 13, 1951 in Robeson County, North Carolina. He was affectionately called “Lakey” by his family and close friends. His early education began in the Robeson County School System and after moving to Augusta, GA at the age of 11, he continued his education in the Richmond County Public School System, graduating from Lucy Craft Laney High School in 1969.

After high school, Layton joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served in Norfolk, VA and in Lakehurst, NJ. He served as an electrician where he received several citations and awards including the National Defense Service Medal. Later, while living in Asbury Park, NJ, Layton wanted to continue his religious walk with God, and he joined St. Stephen AME Zion Church where he was an active member serving on the Men’s Usher Board and F.M.O. Varicks Men’s Ministry, Transportation Ministry, and a former Trustee Member.

Layton’s professional career presented several opportunities to him while working for Grumman, Long Island Railroad, Comcast and NJ Transit. He enjoyed working and interacting with his co-workers and customers. He had a friendly personality, always eager to do whatever he could to help.

Layton always had a strong interest in the mechanics of things and he could fix anything. If he could not fix it initially, he would study it until he figured it out. He did not like quirky things like an unbalanced ceiling fan or a squeaky door.

He would figure out why it did not work properly and fix it. Layton also loved riddles and jokes. These are just a few of his favorite riddles: Why did the chicken cross the road…what is black and white and red (read) all over…name 10 body parts that are spelled with 3 letters.

Layton loved his family and friends dearly, and he would spend hours with them telling jokes and riddles and just having fun. He always had a conversation for the young and the old. His friends and loved ones enjoyed his wit and clever conversation.

On April 24, 2019, Lakey was called home; he had completed the final chapter of his life. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted family: his wife, Agnes Worley; daughter, LaTonya Crawford, stepson, Brandon (Latasha) Carter, sisters, Mildred Ann Goodridge, Jean (Tony) Worley-McCord, Velma (Jason) Wynn; brothers, Williams Anthony Harper, Michael Christopher (Mellissia) Harper, James Shaun (Vivien) Harper, a special uncle Gailey (Gracie) Ford, 3 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins; a host of relatives and friends. Layton was predeceased by his son, Layton Kendall Byrd and a brother-in-law, James R. Goodridge, II.
