OBITUARY Leah Zimmerman December 15, 1945 – September 7, 2018 Leah (Schechterman) Zimmerman died Friday, September 7, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. She was 72. Born on December 15, 1945 in Elizabeth, NJ, she spent her first 5 years in Roselle, NJ before moving to Elizabeth, where she attended Elmora School, Hamilton Jr. High, and Battin High School.

She furthered her education in Union Jr. College and Jersey City University where she received her Teacher’s Certification. Leah taught in Carteret for 7 years and stayed home to raise her children for the following 7 years. She returned to teach in the Long Branch school system for the next 27 years, having taught primarily at the Gregory School, where she retired.

Leah served as camp nurse for the Oakhurst Country Day Camp and then at the Jewish Community Center in Deal. Leah was a volunteer in many organizations. She loved her time with the Long Branch Hadassah and was a three term President.

She was a member of the Temple Beth Torah Sisterhood and served on the Temple Board. Her deepest passion began when she became active with the Oakhurst First Aid Squad, where she gave over 35 years of service. She was a six-time Captain and spent 25 years as a Staff Officer.

She also served as Secretary of the 15th District of the NJFAC and one term as a state Vice President. She was predeceased by her parents: Matthew and Regina Schechterman, her step-father, Herman Klorman, and a step-sister, Ronni Weinstein. Surviving is her loving husband of 47 years, Lonnie; 2 daughters: Laura and Lynn; a brother, Albert Schechterman; step-sisters: Meri Schreiber and Andi Neuwirth; nieces: Shari Sue and Madison J. Mooney; and many, many other extended family members and friends who were more like family.

Leah was the glue who held her family together and made sure she held Sunday dinners regularly and hosted all of the Jewish holidays with her famous brisket. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A funeral service will be held on Sunday at 10AM at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, NJ.
