Obituary for Leonard Maldonado DR. (Col. RET.

) Leonard Maldonado April 10 ,1923 – January 9, 2019 Dr Leonard Maldonado, 95, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in El Paso. Dr. Maldonado was born in Philadelphia, PA. on April 10th, 1923.

He grew up in Puerto Rico and came to New York to attend Columbia. Upon graduating from college, Dr. Maldonado was drafted during WWII as a private but allowed to attend Long Island College of Medicine where upon graduation he was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was a dedicated doctor and urologist serving 47 years on active duty then returning to be a civilian doctor at William Beaumont Army Hospital for an additional 10 years.

Dr. Maldonado is predeceased by his wife of almost 60 years Margaret VanBergen Maldonado. He is survived by his three children, Margaret “Peggy” Boggess (Bill). Leonard “Chip” Maldonado (Melanie), John A. Maldonado (Becky), six grandchildren, Tracy Reidl (Mark), Darcy Stefano (Chris), John LC Maldonado (Shana), Nick Maldonado, Abram Hinson (Jamie), Josh Hinson (Brooke), nine great-grandchildren Clayton Reidl, Brantly Reidl, Sawyer Reidl, Savannah Maldonado, Lainey Maldonado, Rose Maldonado, Hadley Maldonado, William Hinson and Caroline Hinson, his brother Dr. Norman Maldonado (MaryAnne) and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins.

Dr. Maldonado’s family is grateful for his three-year residence at the Monte Vista Assisted Living Facility and his friends and staff that were so friendly and helpful, the wonderful care provided by his Visiting Angels, the care given to him by his Providence Physician and his excellent care at Providence Trans-Mountain Hospital 3rd floor. In lieu of flowers and in honor of his long military career and his 57 years of caring for the wounded and suffering, the family would ask for donations be given instead to the Wounded Warrior Project. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Monday January 14, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast 4631 Hondo Pass.
