OBITUARY Leonora “Lee” Darby September 3, 1932 – January 25, 2019 Leonora Fuschi was born in Brooklyn, NY to Italian immigrants, John Fuschi and Mary Lovelino. Fiercely proud of her Italian heritage and birthplace, she enjoyed her childhood with siblings, Irene, Mike, Joe, Tom and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. While working at Mitchell Air Force Base on Long, Island, Leonora met Airman Ray Darby from Iowa.

They enjoyed dates in the city, attending baseball games, broadway shows, dancing at the Rainbow Room and movies at Radio City Music Hall. They were married April 10th, 1955 at Saint Catherine of Sienna Church on Long Island (where they renewed their vows in the early 2000’s). Lee and Ray settled in Des Moines, Iowa, where she developed her love of baking, cooking, sewing and made strong bonds with her many new friends.

They were blessed with four children, Ray, John, Jeff and Julie. After stints in Minnesota & Arizona, the Darbys made their home in San Diego, in the mid 1970’s. Lee loved the warm weather and the people, making many life long friends.

She worked at La Jolla Bank in the Escrow Department and many years at UCSD Extension as a Registration Advisor. Lee loved working with the students, often bringing them baked goods and having them over to the house for gatherings. Eventually, two grandchildren were added to the family, Ray Jr. and Jennifer, followed later by two great grandchildren, Cristian and Paloma.

In their later years, Lee and Ray retired to Murrieta, where she enjoyed walking, water aerobics and her new social circle. During that time Lee finally fulfilled a life long dream when she and Ray visited Italy. After developing Alzheimer’s disease, Lee and Ray returned to San Diego to be closer to their children, settling at Grossmont Gardens Senior Community.

Surrounded by her loved ones and holding the hand of her beloved Ray, she passed peacefully on January 25th, 2019.
