Obituary for Leopold F. “Lee” Mielewski LATHAM – Lee (Leopold) F. Mielewski passed away peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019, surrounded by his family. Lee was born January 17, 1940, in Watervliet, New York, to loving parents Leopold (Leo) and Louise Mielewski. He loved his hometown and continued to live in Latham for over 50 years.
On December 9, 1961, he married Sheila T. Farrell, with whom he spent 58 wonderful years. Together, Lee and Sheila were blessed with three children; Teresa, Christine and Matthew; and one granddaughter, Erin; also a beloved brother-in-law John H. Farrell Jr. and niece Amanda and nephew John Henry, III. Lee graduated from Watervliet High School in 1957, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics from Siena College in 1963, where his fondness of the Siena Friars began and turned into a long and everlasting friendship.
Lee started his career working with Reverend Joseph Delaney (Albany Diocese) as director of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). He then went to work for the State of New York in the Unemployment Services Department before moving to the Department of Transportation, where he served loyally for over 35 years. Following his retirement, Lee worked part-time for Sargent & Blais being recognized as employee of the year (Paycheck Company).
Always athletic and with a passion for sports, Lee played center on the Watervliet High basketball team and also as goalie on the soccer team. At Siena, he was a valued member of the varsity bowling team. Lee’s love of sports continued for the rest of his life, participating in many golf leagues, becoming an accomplished amateur bowler (scoring a perfect 300 game on numerous occasions with various bowling leagues especially at Sunset Lanes Bowling Alley), coaching the parish basketball team, refereeing for the CYO as well as refereeing high school girl’s games.
He learned to play golf in the very early hours of the morning before going to work. His dedication and practice paid off one spectacular day when he shot a hole-in one at the Van Patten Golf Course. He was fortunate to have had two other holes-in one as well.
Lee was an active member of St. Ambrose Church in Latham, when the children were young, where he served in various capacities including as a member of the Parish Council and as an usher. Later, Lee and his family moved to St. Mary’s Church on Lodge Street in Albany, where he also served as an usher. Throughout his life, Lee enjoyed helping others.
In recent years, before his illness, he and his wife Sheila spent several afternoons and evenings volunteering at the City Mission in Albany serving meals to the needy. When people describe Lee, the words they most often use (in addition to “tall” and “handsome”) are “kind,” “compassionate” and “caring”. His family will miss him immensely.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019, in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel, on the campus of Siena College, 515 Loudon Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
