Jesus welcomed home Leslie O. Williams, age 96, on October 25, 2018. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 40 years. He loved his church and the congregation loved him.

Leslie was born March 27, 1922 in California. He lived with his parents for a short time and then was fostered by “Ma” Anderson and the Wenglers in the Redding area. He attended school in Inwood in a one room school house.

His grades at ages 6 and 12 said he wasn’t good in math or… Read More » reading but Leslie’s later years proved these evaluations wrong. Leslie was in the Navy in WWII serving as electrician on the USS Nevada. It was on this ship that Leslie was injured by the backward air pressure created by the firing of the large guns.

It was just at the end of the war that Leslie met then married Helen Pasanen. The couple eventually moved to Del Norte County in 1952. There were four children born to Leslie and Helen.

Leslie supported the family by being self-employed in the new Crescent Roofing Company. He worked in roofing until age 72 when he decided he could no longer safely climb a ladder. Leslie liked to play harmonica even though he could not read music, however, he could play most songs after hearing them once or twice.

He was a precision carpenter, builder, and roofer. He loved flowers, outdoor activities, and teaching his children about enduring and completing hard work. He was witty, and had a special sense of humor.

Leslie O. Williams is predeceased by wife Helen, and daughter Sandra Nightingale, and Kathleen’s husband John. He is survived by children Kathleen Benskin, Leslie A. Williams and Maria Sousa. Extended family survivors are grandchildren Michelle (Steve Camilli), Marissa (David Ramsier), Marguerite (Rob Wilson), and Catherine (Jason Schmurr), six great grandchildren, Maria’s husband Michael, and Sandra’s widower Terry.

A reception to be held at the church following interment. Please give to the local Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.
