He was born on January 29, 1934 in Comanche, Texas the son of George Washington Stephens and Emma Davis Stephens. He married Mary Alice Tobor on May 18, 1962 in Brownwood, Texas.

She preceded him in death on December 24, 2014. Shorty is survived by his six children, Kenneth Doyle Stephens and wife Karissa of Virginia, Dennis Wayne Stephens and wife Terri of Pottsboro, Christine Hester and husband Joe of Ravenna, Loraine Dhane and husband C.L. of Trenton, Tricia Risner and husband Ray of Trenton and Ida Alice Stephens and John Jones of Randolph. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson, Michael Charles Stephens, granddaughter, Mary Ruth Dhane, four brothers and one sister. Shorty loved fishing and hunting with his coon dogs and spending time with his family. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 28, 2018 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Waldo Family Center.
