OBITUARY LEWIS D. EIGEN September 6, 1936 – October 28, 2018 Dr. Lewis D. Eigen (Age 82) Son of Morris and Beatrice Eigen of New York City Business leader, educator, public servant, and humanitarian, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on 28 October 2018. His impact lives on – his persona included: Extraordinary IQ; Super intellect; Life-long student; Dedicated teacher; Creative Thinker; Master Chef; Believer in and leader of inclusion and diversity; Musician; composer; Landscape artist; Photographer; Individual Thinker, Colorful dresser; Loving husband, father and brother; Adoring Grandfather; And a world traveler always ready for new adventure. A sweet, decent man filled with passion to live.
In 1960, the young savant Dr. Eigen held two Ph.D.’s, he was asked by B. F. Skinner to do the research on programmed instruction. He completed the research and then wrote books which were edited by Stuart Margolis. These books were used by the Air Force and his information was also utilized by educators for early programmed instruction.
Dr. Eigen then dedicated himself to sharing his vast knowledge serving the public health community. In 1964, he designed the Job Corp program and was appointed its Deputy Director shaping the foundations of a program that continues today, and as of this time it has touched 1. 9 million lives.
Dr. Eigen with his wife went on to dedicate themselves to causes including alcohol & drug abuse reduction, education, and international medical projects. He successfully utilized the power of technologically based tools to further his business and social goals. Tens of thousands of people have benefited from his projects which distilled data involving such topics as alcohol, cancer, and tuberculosis into an understandable format for those without benefit of formal public health training.
A strong believer in empowering through education, he created educational sites seeking to bridge the injustice of social, geographic, and economic education gaps. For a person who is not a formal practicing Jew, he had extensive technical rabbinical knowledge on Jewish culture, laws and values. He created a website to show the positive side of Israel.
He has written 19 books, created reference databases, published hundreds of articles, etc. Despite ill-health and severe physical limitations in his later life, he never stopped teaching, learning, or traveling. In recent years with the support of his wife and business partner, Ramona Arnett, he worked tirelessly to improve the human condition in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the world.
His absence will be profoundly felt by his family, as well as, by countless people whose lives he has touched but who may not know his name. He is survived by his wife Ramona Arnett, his son Jonathan Eigen and his wife Ana, his granddaughter Thalia Eigen, his sister Judith Sarna and her husband Morris Sarna, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dr. William Stwalley and Mauricette Stwalley, and his brother-in- law Ned Frisius. The Funeral will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at 3 p.m.at the Chapel at Judean Memorial Gardens, 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd.
