Lilah J. Matthews, age 82, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Christian Care Living Center. She was born October 31, 1936 in Muskegon to Eugene F. and Lilah (DeJonge) Christie and was a life resident. On June 4, 1955, Lilah married Paul M. Matthews in Muskegon and he preceded her in death on August 29, 2008.

Lilah was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She loved animals and nature. She was very crafty and artistic.

Lilah was an accomplished pianist and gave piano lessons for many years. She also played cello for the West Michigan Youth Symphony and took part in various music ensembles through the years. She enjoyed gardening and painting.

Lilah was a long-time member of Muskegon Heights Gospel Tabernacle. She also attended Central Assembly of God and Fellowship Reformed Church. Her coffee clutches often turned into small group bible studies at her home.

Lilah also volunteered for the Muskegon Rescue Mission where she served as past president of the women’s auxiliary. Survivors include 6 children, Daniel (Pamela) Matthews, Pamella (Juan) Ramirez, Valerie (Steve) Westrick, Christopher (Jean) Matthews, Rebecca (Steve) Carr, Jason (Lisa) Matthews; 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Robert Christie; 3 sisters, Vivian Christie, Connie Christie, Mercedes Christie; and 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Christie and Fabiola Christie. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 2 brothers, Joe Christie and Fred Christie; and 1 sister, Virginia Minnerick.

A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, May 6, 2019 at Unity Reformed Church (1521 Porter Rd. ) with Pastor David Celeskey officiating. Visitation will be held 3-6 PM Sunday at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100.
