OBITUARY Linwood Thacker Carter July 5, 1930 – October 10, 2018 Play Tribute Movie CHARLOTTE – Linwood Thacker Carter, age 88, passed away on October 10, 2018 in Charlotte, NC. He was born on July 5, 1930 in Milton, NC in Caswell County, son of the late Mary Jane Thacker Carter and William Green Carter. Linwood grew up in Yanceyville, NC.

Upon graduation from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1948, he enlisted in a US Navy special training program and was stationed on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Philippine Sea. The US Navy fleet shared operational and war maneuver procedures with the British fleet in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. He married Elizabeth Davis on August 26, 1951 and graduated from High Point University in High Point, NC where he received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1953.

While attending High Point University, Carter served as President of Delta Alpha Epsilon, a local fraternity, and was instrumental in transitioning his local chapter into becoming Lambda Chi Alpha national fraternity. Following college graduation, he joined Desoto Chemical Coatings, a manufacturing paint plant company and laboratory in Greensboro, NC, as a development chemist formulator of various paints and coatings. Linwood moved to Charlotte, NC in 1961 and formed a manufacturing company, Carolina Coatings, Inc., which grew to become a regional diversified manufacturer of general trade sales paints for the consumer, professional paint contractors and commercial home builders, which were sold through the Carolina Coatings stores located throughout the Carolinas.

All types of chemical resistant and industrial paint finishes manufactured by CCI were shipped direct to customers in the Carolinas. Carter was a former President of the Piedmont Society of Paint and Coatings Technology and served on the Charlotte Home Builders Board of Directors as an associate member. He was a member of the National Association of Paint and Varnish Manufacturers.

Linwood, owner and President of Carolina Coatings, retired in 1991 after 30 years and sold his company to a larger Australian company. Upon retirement, he traveled extensively, enjoyed yard work and landscaping projects as well as playing golf. Linwood was an avid reader of various newspapers and investment periodicals and had a deep interest in politics at all levels of government.

He was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church and Carmel Country Club. In addition to his parents, Carter was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth “Lib” Davis Carter; second wife, Peggy Reynolds Carter; brothers, Reverend John William Carter, Wesley Lee Carter; and sister, Dora Carter Watlington. Linwood is survived by his daughters, Carol Carter Evangelist and Catherine Elizabeth Carter, both of Charlotte.

He leaves behind three grandchildren of whom he was exceptionally proud: Carter Brice Crawford, Elizabeth Carter Pandos and Anna Catherine Pandos; brother, Charles Glenn “Bo” Carter; sister, Sarah Carter Watlington; and sister-in-law, Sarah Bobbitt Carter. His family remembers him as a loving father and grandfather. A memorial service will be held at Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 12, 2018.

The family will be greeting friends and relatives following the service. Burial at Sharon Memorial Park will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

His family would like thank the oncology team at Carolinas Medical Center.
