Lola Bernice Shumaker, age 97, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at George Ade Memorial Healthcare in Brook, Indiana. Lola was born in Rensselaer on April 2, 1921, the daughter of Edward C. and Clara H. (Ringeisen) Cook. She was raised in Hanging Grove Township on the family farm.

Lola attended the Hanging Grove School and graduated with the class of 1939 from Rensselaer High School. On June 1, 1940, Lola married her sweetheart Donald C. Shumaker at her parent’s home in Hanging Grove Township, Rensselaer, Indiana. Lola and Don were blessed with two children, Joyce (Gary) Rule and David Shumaker, six grandchildren, Kim (Brad) Alson, Troy (Deana) Rule, Nathan Rule, Angi Raisor, Jason (Angie) Shumaker and Michael (Laura) Shumaker and fourteen great-grandchildren, Justin, Jenna, Paige, Bryant, Cody, Spencer, Lexus, Kendall, Joe, Cruz, Grace, Ivy, Briar and Kevee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Clara Cook, her husband Donald Shumaker on March 29, 1998, her son David Shumaker, infant grandson Kyle, great-grandson Cody, and three sisters, Irene Anderson, Gladys Jordan and Eleanor Cook. Lola first worked as a clerk at the former Russell Jewelry in Rensselaer. She later worked as a secretary for Dr. Robert Pavy, the Trinity United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau Insurance and the Jasper County Surveyor’s office.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Day Circle, the Order of Eastern Star and was a life member of Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority. Friends will be received at the Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Funeral services for Lola will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer on Friday, January 25, 2019. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Rensselaer.
