Obituary for Lonnie Taylor Lonnie Taylor passed away June 12, 2018, peacefully at home. Born in Mt. Airy, NC, August 2, 1952, he was preceded in death by his parents, mother, Novella Taylor Wiggins; father, Belvin R. Taylor; and brother, Thomas R. Taylor.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Patty of 29 years; son, Lonnie Christopher (Tiffany); 3 grandchildren, Christian, Shaha, and Caleb; Patty’s brothers and sister and their spouses, Ronald and Ann Dgien, Tina and Ray Carter, Tony and Vickie Dgien; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Lonnie retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years as a Military Policeman. He spent many years stationed in Germany where during his assignment in Hanau he met Patty.
His assignment as an Army Recruiter brought him to Richmond where he returned after retiring from the military. He continued his career working in law enforcement at Virginia State University and then at Capital One for 19 years. He was an avid gun collector, who enjoyed sharing his knowledge and shooting tips particularly with his nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed other pastimes including shooting pool, coin collecting, listening to his extensive music collection or watching westerns or a good movie. More than anything Lonnie cherished the friendships and relationships he built and maintained with those he crossed paths throughout his life. From his early childhood days throughout his military and professional career and personal life, Lonnie had knack for engaging conversation and never forgetting a face, regardless how much time had passed.
The family is particularly grateful for the assistance of special friends, James Andrews and Hamilton Holloway, who provided great support especially during the hospital stays and return home, and niece, Nicole Dgien and sister, Tina for the care provided. Great appreciation is extended to the nurses and staff of the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital for the continued care and support following his kidney transplant seven years ago. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834, with the Reverend Robert Livesay III officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. Thursday June 14, 2018 at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 in the family cemetery in Westfield, North Carolina. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice.
