Obituary for Lucy Elaine Benton Lucy Elaine Ford Benton of Burleson, TX, passed away in her home on December 25th, Christmas morning at 7am, with her husband and two of her daughters in attendance. She had been battling ovarian cancer for over 4 years. She was 72 years old.

Lucy was born in Bonham, TX, on July 18, 1946, to Ray and Sammie Ford. She attended Plainview High School, South Plains Junior College, and then graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Elementary Education. She met Joe Harold Benton right after college when she ran out of gas and he stopped to help her.

They married in May 18, 1970. She started teaching elementary school immediately after graduation. She taught for 32 years in at Kennedale and then Burleson ISD, finishing her teaching career with Nazarene Christian Academy in Crowley.

Lucy and Joe moved to Burleson with their two daughters, Tana and Kristina, in 1975. Daughter Charlotte was born soon after. They joined Crestmont Baptist Church when Charlotte was a baby and remained active members for over 40 years.

Lucy was a devoted and loving teacher of children. She taught at Norwood Elementary until Jack Taylor was built at which time she was one of the Burleson teachers chosen to teach 2ndgrade for the opening year at that school. She became their Math Specialist after some years there and helped many students pass their math classes and their STAAR exams.

When she retired, she then began teaching at Nazarene Christian Academy and taught many more years there, even after her diagnosis of ovarian cancer. She taught until she didn’t have the strength to continue. She and Joe also taught children’s Sunday School at Crestmont Baptist for countless years, and she tutored students in reading and math outside of school.

Her passion was to help children in any way that she could. Her love of children and for women in need spurred her to volunteer many of her free hours to the Pregnancy Aid Center and Rachel’s Hope of Burleson. Lucy was a 20-year survivor of stage 4 breast cancer preceding her diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Her great love for and faith in Jesus and the belief that He was always taking care of her no matter what she faced, helped her defy the odds over and over again, even in her fight with ovarian cancer. Her family called her the Energizer Bunny because she kept coming back from impossible medical results and triumphantly lived through much more than anyone would have thought possible. Lucy loved to read, travel, be with friends and family, enjoy the company of her daughters and grandchildren and great grandchildren, play board games and work puzzles, and to be with Joe on their countless camping and fishing trips.

She is survived by her husband Joe Benton, daughter Tana Agudelo and husband Alvaro of Fort Worth, TX, Kristina Goodloe of Del Valle, TX, daughter Charlotte Stotts and husband Jason of Irving, TX, 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, brother Don Ford and wife Roseva of Whitney, TX, and sister Karen Daily and husband Ron of Santo, TX.
