Obituary for Lyal “Shorty” LeClair Fox Sr Lyal “Shorty” Fox Sr., age 88, died on Monday, May 28th, 2018, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was born May 7th, 1930 the son of Merwyn L. Sr. and Elizabeth Berto Fox in New Sharon, Iowa. He graduated from Lacey High School in 1948 and spent his entire life farming and managing night clubs in the New Sharon and Oskaloosa area.

Lyal was united in marriage to Barbara Phillips in 1960 and they proudly celebrated their golden anniversary in 2010 with their family. Lyal was a published author and active in many local community organizations, serving as an officer in the local Junior Chamber of Commerce, and as their State Vice President in 1959. He was also a member of the Oskaloosa Elks Lodge for over 55 years.

He is survived by his wife and their three children, Lyal Fox, Jr, (Cara) of Norway, Iowa, Curt Fox (Roxanne) of Ankeny, Iowa, Katherine Dare (Lance) of Des Moines, Iowa; grandsons Lyal Fox III of Alexandria, Virginia, Noah Fox of Ankeny, Iowa; granddaughter Gabrielle Fox of Ankeny, Iowa; step-grandson Jake Dare of Des Moines, Iowa; step-granddaughters Anna and Chloe Schmidt of Norway, Iowa; great-granddaughters Lorelai and Kira; sister Eileen Ward (Kenny) of New Sharon, Iowa; brother-in-law Dick Holloway of Bloomington, Minnesota and sister-in-law Joyce Fox of New Sharon, Iowa Lyal was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Merwyn L. Fox Jr. of New Sharon, Iowa, his sister Patricia Holloway of Bloomington, Minnesota, and his sister-in-law Mary Phillips of Oskaloosa, Iowa. According to Lyal’s wishes, his body has been cremated and private family services will be held. Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
