Madlyn J. Heise, 97, went home to be with the Lord on December 3, 2018. Madlyn was born in Jackson, MI to Arlow and Irene (Gregory) Crites. After graduating from Northern High School in Detroit in 1938, Madlyn spent several summers working as a nanny in the Chicago area, and later at the Chicago Club in Charlevoix, MI where she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” C. Heise.

Shortly after meeting Madlyn, Bob enlisted in the United States Army, and was deployed to New Guinea to serve during World War II. The two would continue their courtship through exchange letters, and, upon Bobs return, the two wed in Detroit on March 31, 1945. Bob and Madlyn were blessed with three children, Paula, Marlo, and Robert T. As her children grew, Madlyn began working in the surgical department at Garden City Hospital, in Garden City, MI.

After 17 years, she retired from Garden City Hospital. She and Bob moved back to Charlevoix in 1976. Retirement didn’t quite suit Madlyn, as she later went back to work in the surgical department at Charlevoix Area Hospital.

She continued to volunteer at the hospital for many years after her final retirement in 1986. Besides her volunteer work, Madlyn was also a lifetime member of the Charlevoix Area Hospital Guild, a member of the American Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Stars. She also served as an Elder at the Greensky United Methodist Indian Mission Church.

Madlyn is survived by her daughters, Paula Tinsley and Marlo Stoneham, as well as her six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, whom she lvoed dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob, son, Robert, grandson, James Stoneham, and granddaughter, Angela Nicole. Madlyn will always be remembered as a kind and generous Christian, and one who met both challenges and triumphs with grace.

Funeral services will be held announced in the near future. Arrangements are being handled by the Winchester Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
