Obituary for Mari Lou Bokern Bokern, Marie-Louise “Mari Lou” Passed on Friday night, April 28, 2018. Beloved wife of Richard W. Bokern and dear mother of Jamie Welky (Heidi) of Webster Groves and David Welky (Ali) of Conway, Arkansas, and treasured grandmother of Sage, Jude, Kate, Marin, and Kayla Welky. Born on August 1, 1942 in Ottawa, Illinois to William and Muriel (née Bereiter) Baird, Mari Lou grew up in the Ottawa area and in La Grange, Illinois.

In 1961 she moved to St. Louis to attend Washington University. Both of her sons were born and raised in St. Louis. Mari Lou was an avid reader, enjoyed sewing and word games, and was a master of crossword puzzles.

She enjoyed baseball games, classical music, and ocean cruises. She was an enthusiastic participant in the Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) program and had many friends among its members. Industrious and reliable, she worked for several decades, most recently as a supervisor in the office of Hogan Trucking, from which she retired in 2008.

In early January Mari Lou was hospitalized with influenza. While battling back from that disease, she was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune condition myasthenia gravis in mid-March, which blocked proper communication between her nerves and muscles. Although she mounted a valiant fight, suffering greatly, the combined effects of her illnesses eventually overwhelmed her.

Truly a devoted wife and mother, Mari Lou will be missed greatly by her family and her many dear friends. A Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. at BOPP Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd. , Kirkwood.

Memorials may be given to the Humane Society.
