Obituary for Maria E. Tsarouhas (Kreatsoulas) Print Tsarouhas Maria (Kreatsoulas) died suddenly at her home in Arlington surrounded by her loving family on Saturday February 2nd. Maria was born in Chios, Greece. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years Emmanuel Tsarouhas.
She is survived by her son Markellos and his wife Catherine and their children Emmanuel and Maria of Winchester. She is survived by her sister Stella Boulas and sister-in-law Anastasia Kreatsoulas of Athens, Greece. Proud Aunt to: Katerina and Nick Kladis, Steve and Evelyn Boulas and kids, Ioanna Kreatsoulas and kids, Ioannis and Dora Kreatsoulas and Son, Katerina Zikakis and kids, Maria Kladis and Ricardo Sanchez, Demetrios Kladis, Lemonia Antonakis and kids, Chrysoula Antonakis and kids, Georgios and Peny Vourliotis and kids, Lemonia and Michalis Kiriatzis and kids, Michalis and Kiki Lytsakis, Vassiliki and Nikos Zannikou and many more relatives in Athens and the island she was born Chios, Greece.
Maria was very close to her Niece Katerina Kladis who Maria helped care and mentor Katerina when she was younger. Katerina has been caring for her second mom for the last 10 years but even before that they were shopping and spending a lot of time together. Maria was born in Karyes on the island of Chios.
She was the first child of Ioannis and Lemonia (Maris) Kreatsoulas. Maria had three sisters Despina, Stella, Elefteria and a brother Konstantine that survived the Nazi occupation of Greece. Maria had to drop out of school at 3rd grade and got an apprentice job to be trained as a seamstress/dressmaker.
During the Nazi occupation three of her young siblings died because of disease and malnutrition. During the war Maria was able to help support her family by making dresses for farm women in exchange for food. After the liberation of Greece in 1945, Maria and her mother moved to Athens where Maria started making dresses for rich Athenian women.
Within a couple of years the rest of the family joined them and they were able to buy land and build a small house for the whole family. Five years later Maria was introduced to Emmanuel Tsarouhas who was adjusting to civilian life after serving in the Greek Army under the British command. Maria and Emmanuel got married and 5 years later their son Markellos was born and Maria dedicated her self to raising her son with her husband and her very close family.
In 1978 Markellos applied to colleges in the Boston area and Maria and her husband Emmanuel decided to come to Boston so they can be close to their only son. Maria and Emmanuel sacrificed a very comfortable life in Athens, her friends and family in order to start a new life in Boston close to her only son. Maria moved to Somerville with her husband and Son and where helped to settle in by her loving sister Stella Boulas and her husband Nicholas Boulas and their kids Steve Boulas and Katerina Zikaki (Boulas).
Maria worked for C&K Components, Priscilla Gowns and she made special Gowns at home for the Greek American women. In 1988 Maria and Emmanuel moved to their own house in Arlington that included a big yard. Maria was an amazing Gardner and she always like to grow and give flowers and vegetables to family, neighbors and people who she did not even know and they were passing by her corner garden lot.
Maria always wanted to help everyone and she always used to say to her son “if you help people by giving them money, God will always pay back by providing more money and health”. Maria’s son, Markellos met his future wife, Catherine in College and they had two children, Emmanuel and Maria. Maria was an integral part of caring for them and She loved and adored her grandchildren.
Maria was an amazing cook and she loved to invite people over. Shared many family dinners and have many fond memories of her love, care, and wonderfully delicious Greek food. Maria five years ago had an accident while cleaning her porch from snow she lost her balance and fell down the front staircase.
Her body temperature reached 78 degrees F but she was able to survive and she has been living under 24 hour care at her house in Arlington. Maria passed away very peacefully at 10:48 AM at her home holding her son’s hand and surrounded by her family. Maria was an amazing woman that loved her family and especially her son “Maki” and her grandchildren (paidia) Emmanuel and Maria.
She loved sewing, gardening, cooking and making sure that everyone had enough to eat. Also she was very generous and loving to all her family. A funeral service will be held at St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church 4 Appleton St, Arlington, MA on Thursday February 7th at 11am please go directly to church.
Visiting hours will be held at the Lane Funeral Home 760 Main St. (Rte. 38) WINCHESTER on Wednesday February 6th from 5 thru 7pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Interment Wildwood Cemetery Winchester.
