Obituary for Marian McAndrews Marian (Yanak) McAndrews, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed away November 6, 2018 at age 69 surrounded by family. A lifelong Philadelphia resident, Marian was born in Southwest Philly where she attended Most Blessed Sacrament Primary School (the largest in the nation at the time) at 56th and Chester Avenue. She graduated from West Catholic HS for Girls Class of 1967, at 45th and Chestnut Streets.

Marian was retired from the City of Philadelphia’s Department of License and Inspections where she worked for over 30 years while rising to the rank as Commercial Fire Code Enforcement Supervisor – one of only two in the entire city! Marian was many things: a gardener, bicyclist, cancer fighter, beach lover, arts and entertainment supporter, and a curious traveler who with her husband recently completed trips across the Canadian Rocky Mountains, as well as a trek across the famous U.S. Route 66. For Marian, though, her most important role was as “Grandma” to her nine loving grandchildren.

Whether she was spending time with her grandkids on the beach and Ocean City’s boardwalk or visiting her extended family and wide network of friends, Marian had an innate ability to connect with others, starting many conversations with “What parish are you from? ” A vibrant and active member in her adopted neighborhood of Francisville, Marian enjoyed Fairmount Park and the Schuylkill River for riding her bicycle and walking. She participated in several long-distance cycling races, including the NYC 5 Borough Bike Tour and the 50+ mile Tour de Shore, where at 55 years old she finished before many police officers half her age.

Marian was an active member of St. Francis Xavier parish, where she generously donated her time along with her husband George for 20 years counting Mass collections, and was also active at St. Andrew’s Lithuanian Church in the Fairmount area. She nurtured friends throughout her life and more recently spent time with her book club as well as a network of women battling breast cancer both in Fairmount and the Jersey Shore town of Ventnor. Marian is survived by her husband George of 49 years, her sons Sean (Tori), David (Lauren), and daughter Jill Coleman (Brian), and her sister Terri (Jim) Lai.

Marian’s nine loving grandchildren who were the center of her life are (oldest to youngest): Anna, Owen, Grace, Kyle, Rosemary, Carly, Shane, Jack and Liam. She was pre-deceased by her parents Joseph and Anna Marie Yanak, and her brother Joseph (Joni). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 2319 Green Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Visiting hours will precede the Mass starting at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Camilla Hall, 145 King Road, Box 100, Immaculata, PA. 19345 or Villa St. Joseph 1436 Lansdowne Ave. , Darby, PA 19023.
