Born in Cassano Irpino, Avellino Italy, Mariannina (Nina), beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died at the age of 96. She was the youngest of 4 children and the last of her surviving brother and sisters. After completing her education, Mariannina worked as a talented seamstress and sewing instructor in her hometown of Cassano Irpino.

After her true love Bartolomeo’s six year Italian army service during WWII, they were married on September 17th, 1947 in Cassano Irpino. Bartolomeo first immigrated to Ontario, Canada and then the U.S. in 1952 and she followed three years later in 1955 with their three children. They settled in New Jersey, first Newark and later Bloomfield.

She became a naturalized American citizen in 1972. They were married for 63 years when Bartolomeo passed away in 2010. An exceptionally creative and very talented seamstress, she worked sewing piecework when her children were young.

She made her own wedding gown from the leftover silk fabric from WWII parachutes. She later worked nights at the Peerless Tube Factory in Bloomfield to help put her children through college. She spent a lot of her free time preparing homemade Italian feasts for family and friends, making special occasions cherished memories.

Nina was a very devoted Catholic all of her life. She was beautiful and genuinely affectionate, loving and sweet to everyone she met. She and Bart moved to Vashon 12 years ago to be closer to immediate family.

She continued to love to cook homemade Italian meals, crochet and spending time with family and friends. She suffered from dementia the past few years of her life. Nina is survived by her son Salvatore (Rebecca) Petriello of Seattle, WA, daughter MaryAnn (Warren) Beardsley of Vashon, WA.

, daughter in law Lynne Petriello of Cobble Hill, B.C., 8 grandchildren (including Christopher and Brett Beardsley of Vashon) and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bartolomeo, her beloved sons Michael, Donato and Joseph. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday January 5th at 11:00AM , Rosary at 10:30AM, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Vashon Island.

Memorial donations can be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
