OBITUARY Marie A. McCarthy June 15, 1922 – January 6, 2019 Marie A. McCarthy, a sixty year resident of River Edge, NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6th, 2019 at the age of 96. Marie was the beloved wife of Robert Joseph McCarthy who preceded her in death. Marie was born on June 15, 1922, to Martin and Ida Schattin of Bogota, NJ.

She graduated from the Hackensack Hospital School of Nursing and became a head nurse at Hackensack Hospital before serving in active duty in the United States Army Nurse Corp. She attained the rank of 1st lieutenant before her discharge in July 1945. She subsequently attended New York University obtaining a bachelor degree in the field of community health nursing.

Marie was employed by the Central Bergen (NJ) Visiting Nurse Service and by the Bergen County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Marie, a devoted mother, grandmother and aunt, is survived by her two daughters and their families: Ann Marie Jahrling, son-in-law, Stephen Jahrling and grandson, Christian of Waterflow, NM and by Mary McCarthy-Coyle, her husband Kevin Coyle, and grandson, Ryan of Hillsdale, NJ. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.

Marie is preceded in death by her parents and beloved brother, Martin Schattin (wife, Lillian), brother-in-laws: James McCarthy (wife, Mary), and Cornelius McCarthy (wife, Theresa), and sister-in-laws: Rita Mueck (husband, Frank), and Constance Miller (husband, Robert). The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 4-8 PM at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood. A Mass celebrating Marie’s life and faith will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 10:00am at St John the Baptist Church, Hillsdale.

The internment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, NJ.
