Obituary for Marion Emory Hicks Marion Emory Hicks, 96, of Spotsylvania County passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2018. He was born and raised in Spotsylvania when times were tough and hard work was the norm. He never forgot where he came from and never met a stranger.

His favorite pastime was riding through the County recalling the days and times of his youth, family and old friends, and he loved to go out with family and friends for meals at local diners – “my kind of food”. . As a teenager, he signed up for the Civilian Conservation Corps and then served in the Army during WWII.

Always the entrepreneur, he was a self-made man, working many jobs as a young man, cutting wood, hauling slabs, driving a dump truck, operating a service station, and working at the FMC (Sylvania) Plant, often several jobs at a time. He built and operated a dance hall at Marye in Spotsylvania County and a grocery store and restaurant on Lafayette Blvd. In keeping with his rural roots, in the early 1950s he purchased a tract of land which he cleared to create a small farm located partially in the City and lived on that property until his death.

He started and operated a residential building and development business, developing Mount Pleasant s/d and building many affordable houses throughout the Fredericksburg area, often helping the buyer to finance the purchase. He also developed, owned and operated Glenwood Mobile Home Park for nearly 35 years. In the 1970s, he served two terms on the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors.

Always looking for the next opportunity, he remained active with a strong mind and memory, and a desire to live to the fullest right up until his death. He was a life-long and the oldest member of Shady Grove Methodist Church. Marion is survived by his son, Ronald L. Hicks (Nancy); daughter, Carole Anne Hicks; a sister, Ina Eley (Roy); five grandchildren, Joseph E. “Jeh” Hicks, Jason T. “Tee” Hicks (Kelly), Anne “ Katie” Hicks Leary (Dennis), Christopher “Beau” Berry (Laurel), and Winston “Colby” Hicks; nine great grandchildren, Hunter and Maddie Hicks, Teagan, Jake and Emma Hicks, Jonathan, Harper, and Paige Leary, and Emory and (due in October) Madison Berry; sister-in-law, Ozelle A. Hall; long-time friend, Sandra Welborn; and many nieces and nephews.
