Martha Haywood Cross, age 84, of Lewisburg, died peacefully Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 22, 1935 in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Jack Moore and the late Elsie Knight Moore. She was married to Shelby Haywood for 31 years who preceded her in death on December 15, 1982.

She later married Ray Cross who preceded her in death on July 20, 1999. She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Jenny Haywood Harmon; brother, Jim Moore; and sister, Ann Moore Adams. Martha was known as a strong willed and independent woman, but most importantly her “spit fire” personality.

While attending Marshall County High School, she was Captain of the Tigerettes basketball team. Martha was never one to back down from a challenge, spending many hours working on the family farm. She served as the former head of the Democratic National Party, and as a Cub Scout leader of both the boy and girl scouts.

She was a longtime devoted member of Cornersville Church of Christ. Martha lived a life time of adventures and experiences, some of which would have made a wonderful book. Survivors include her daughters, Sally Haywood Durocher & Jacqueline “Jackie” (Kevin) Gower of Lewisburg; son, William Haywood of Lewisburg; sister, Beverly Moore Howard of Nesbit, Mississippi; grandchildren, Martha Jane Durocher, Kellen Gower, McKenzie Gower, Jamie (Ian) Brown, Leah (Daniel) Studd, Shelby Haywood, Leigh Anne Bates, Jay Harmon, Will Harmon & Dr. Brian (Mitzi) Fann; great-grandchildren, Jace Harmon, Addison Woods, Laney Studd, Caleb Studd, Cole Martin, Aiden Brown, John Jayden Mayfield, Lilli Mai Fann & Mary Stinnett Fann.

A Funeral Service will be conducted Friday at 3:00P.M. in the chapel of Bills-McGaugh & Hamilton Funeral Home with Brother Jimmy Jean officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday at 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Davis-Moore Cemetery.
