Dawson–Mrs. Martha Johnson Harris, 91, died on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the Willson Hospice House in Albany. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at Harvey Funeral Chapel in Dawson with interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends and guests immediately after the funeral service at the funeral home.

Martha was born on January 28, 1927 in Terrell County, daughter of the late John Howell Melton and Hattie Wall Melton. She lived here all of her life, attended schools in Bronwood and graduated from Bronwood High School. She later attended nursing school in Cuthbert.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dawson. She was a retired office manager with the Terrell Medical Clinic of Dawson. After her retirement, she enjoyed baking wonderful sweets and working in her yard and garden.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Marion Johnson; four brothers, Paul Melton, Jarvis Melton, Jack Melton and Jim Melton; five sisters, Amanda Lee, Nadine Bigelow Farmer, Mae West, Marie Lee Smithwick, and Geraldine Boone; and step-daughter, Lisa Harris. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Benjamin Franklin “Ben” Harris of Dawson; two daughters, Ann J. Bass (Lee) of Dawson and Tammy C. Deen of Panama City, Florida; a son, James Marion “Jimmy” Johnson (Mary Alice) of Dawson; six grandchildren, Teresa Freeman (Robby) and Lisa Icard (Rex) all of Dawson, and Paige Garey of Leesburg, Tanya Scott (Adam) of Leesburg, Christopher Clark of Savannah, and Jameson Clark of Newton; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two step-daughters, Linda Davenport and Dee Ellen Suarez, both of Athens, nine step-grandchildren and 23 step-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Willson Hospice House, 320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA 31707 or to Alzheimer’s Outreach Center, 307 Flint Avenue, Albany, GA 31701.
