Collins- Marvin Edward Horner, Col. USAF Retired, Brig. Gen Ga ANG retired passed away Monday, October 1, 2018 at OPTIM Medical Center in Reidsville.
Marvin had resided in Collins since the mid 1990’s, he is survived by his wife Kay Lynn Canady and his loving partner of 59 years. Marvin was born on a farm near Norfolk , NE. , on December 11, 1936.
He was educated in a one room country school with all eight grades in the same room. He attended Norfolk Senior High School and Norfolk Junior College before entering the Air Force through the Aviation Cadet Program. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and Navigator in December 1957.
After flying for several years in the Strategic Air Command, he became an Aircraft Maintenance Officer. In 1967-1968 he was an advisor to the Vietnamese Air Force Logistic Wing at Bien Hoa, Vietnam. Upon returning to the states, he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and joined the Georgia Air National Guard.
He served as the maintenance officer and Chief of Maintenance for several years. His last assignment before retirement in 1992 was the Deputy Commander of Support. He logged over 3600 hours in 15 different aircraft and flew over 100 combat missions in Vietnam.
As a maintenance officer had been responsible for 12 different types of aircraft including cargo, tankers, bombers and fighters. He was stationed at 12 different Air Force bases and performed temporary duty at many more. His decorations include the Bronze Star; Air Medal with 4 Bronze Clusters; Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Bronze Cluster; AF Commendation Medal; AF Achievement Medal; AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 1 Bronze Cluster and 3 Silver Clusters; AF Outstanding Unit Award with; 1 Bronze Cluster and 2 Silver Clusters; AF Good Conduct Medal; AF Training Ribbon; AF Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Readiness Medal; National Defense Service medal with 1 Bronze Star; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Georgia Meritorious Service Medal with Bronze Cluster; Georgia Commendation Medal; Georgia Longevity Ribbon with Boars Head.
Upon retirement from the Georgia Air National Guard, after more than 38 years with the military, General Horner helped to start the Youth Challenge Academy at Ft. Stewart Georgia. He worked in that capacity for 13 years as the Support Supervisor before retiring from the State of Georgia.
He continued to work with the Youth Challenge Academy as the treasurer on the youth Challenge Academy Foundation, a nonprofit organization, primarily established to offer college scholarships for graduates that desire to continue their education. After his State retirement, he worked for six years at the Paul Anderson Youth Home in Vidalia, Ga. , teaching Mathematics.
He has served as a Deacon at several churches during his travels and has been on the Administrative Board as well as serving as Deacon, Teacher, Lay Pastor, Elder, Seniors’ Leader, and Treasurer for the Abundant Faith Pentecostal Church in Reidsville, Georgia. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Marva Morse and her husband Rob of Madison, AL. and Michelle Maughan of Cumming, Ga.
; grandchildren, Chrislyn Morse Taylor and her husband Tim of Birmingham, AL. , Jonathan Morse of Madison, AL. , and Ryan Maughan of Cumming, Ga.
, his brother in law Don Volk of Norfolk, NE, his sister in law Loretta Horner of Schuyler, NE, as well as several nieces and nephews. Was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Bessie Horner and sister, Ruth Volk, Norfolk, NE and his brother, Harold Horner of Schuyler, NE. The family will receive friends on Friday October 5, 2018, beginning at 12:30 pm in the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial.
Funeral services will follow at 1:30pm with the Reverends John Price and Mike Palma officiating. Interment will be in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 3:00pm with full military honors rendered by the United States Air Force. Low Country Cremation and Burial is serving the Horner family.
