Obituary for Mary Jane Hughes Mary Jane Hughes October 4, 1926 – December 4, 2018 Mary Jane Hughes, 92, went to be with her Lord on December 4, 2018, in Bakersfield. She is now reunited with her husband, Leon, who passed away on March 7, 2015. Mary was born October 4, 1926, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Eva and Robert Wise.
In 1936, the family moved to Kern County. Robert worked in the oil industry and was killed in an oilfield fire when Mary was a teenager. Mary graduated from Bakersfield High School at 16.
She and her lifelong friend, Connie West, attended their 75th class reunion a few years ago. Mary was devoted to her family and God. She was a talented seamstress, china painter, and porcelain doll maker, including their clothes.
She took great joy in giving her dolls to family and friends. She loved to cook, making great pies. She was a member of Canyon Hills Assembly of God Church.
Mary met Leon when he returned from WWII. They married soon after and began an almost 69-year love story. They enjoyed their family and traveling, seeing most of the United States, going to Hawaii for their 50th anniversary – holding hands all the way.
Mary Jane is survived by her children, daughter, Barbara Wood and husband Jerry; son, Robert Hughes and wife Sandy; daughter, Eva Hebebrand and husband David; grandchildren, Jerry Wood II and Sandy, Crystal Wood, Brian and Londi Hughes, Aaron and Megan Hughes, Duane and Stephanie Hebebrand, and Cory Hebebrand; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jack, Shelby, Isabella, Carter, Kimber, and Trip; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, La Homa and Ken Tucker; being predeceased by sisters, Virginia Bordan and Cella Nelson; and stepfather, Jay Betzer. Mary was a woman of honor and kindness and will be missed. A visitation will be held Monday, December 10th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the funeral at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11th, at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Boulevard, Bakersfield, with interment to follow immediately.
