Mary’s Obituary Mary Jane Smith, 84, of Lucas, SD passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at her home near Lucas, SD. Funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20th, 2019 at 11:00AM at the Lucas Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Lucas Cemetery.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service on Monday. Mary Jane was born on the family farm assisted by Dr. Quinn of Burke on December 5, 1934. She was the fifth child of Bessie and Emil Holub.

She joined her 3 brothers and 1 sister. She went to Streeter School and on to Burke High School. Later she married a country boy Martin Smith from Lucas, SD which then remained her home and where they raised their family.

During her time on the she did different jobs after the oldest children grew up, she drove a school bus for 17 years and enjoyed it very much. While the children were in school she spent her time working at the local grocery store until 3:15PM and then made the journey home. She later took care of some elderly people who could no longer stay alone.

In 2000 her loving husband suddenly passed away and she remained on the farm. Mary Jane leaves to mourn her daughter Linda (Dennis) Almendinger of Winner, SD, son David (Michelle) of Watertown, SD and Luther (Kim) of Sioux Falls, SD, brother John Holub, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. Preceding her in death are her parents Emil and Bessie, husband Martin, her two sons; Dennis and John, Sister Velma Shavlik, brothers Arthur and Frank and sisters-in-law Alma and Marie.
